Cross the Tamarindo Estuary & Get the Surf of a Lifetime in Playa Grande
Your adventure begins with a quick boat ride up the estuary from Tamarindo to Hotel Bula Bula, where you’ll be taken to your lesson. The lesson includes a surfboard and surf shirt. After 90 minutes in the water with experienced instructors, you’ll head over to Frijoles Locos Surf Shop where you can shower, change, pick up killer duds and get more expert advice on surf equipment. We’ll even take you back to Tamarindo.
Boat Ride to Playa Grande
Kick back and take in all of the surroundings. The estuary you are travelling down is packed with wildlife, as it is part of the Baulas National Marine Park. Once you land on the Grande side, it’s just a short jaunt in our van to the surf spot through picturesque landscapes.
You can choose to drive from Tamarindo in your rental car, and park at our surf shop, however, it will take 25-30 minutes to drive, each way. The cost if you drive yourselves to Frijoles Locos Surf Shop is $120.
90-minute Surf Lesson
Best for people who appreciate a custom experience, get set to have loads of fun and jump in with your instructor.
Your personalized instruction is set up specifically for your group: 1 instructor can teach up to 4 students. With pricing set at one low rate, groups can stay flexible in case people drop out or want to join on a whim. We like keeping the pura vida spirit.
Of course your a board and rash-guard are included with your lesson for peak performance and dare we say it again, fun.
Rinse & "Souvenir" at the Shop
Your lesson might be 90 minutes of action packed fun, but we think it’s smart to plan on allowing at least 2- 3 hours out of your day on your trip across the estuary.
Shower off, pick up the best surf swag at the Frijoles Locos surf shop, and explore the quaint town of Playa Grande. Plus you will probably have worked up a great appetite, and after your water time, you might be down to grub on some food at one of our local eateries. No worries, we will get you back.

Note: Lessons are scheduled according to tides however, we will do our best to accommodate your request. And we ask for payment in advance, so you don’t have to worry about taking out your wallet in the waves. It’s best to leave all unnecessary valuables at your hotel, bring only what you will be using in the water, plus a towel and water bottle.
