Tenorio

Located with the northern highlands along the eastern border of the Guanacaste Mountains and adjacent to Rincon de la Vieja, lies the Tenorio National Park, and home to the Tenorio and Miravalles Volcanoes. Tenorio Volcano, at nearly 2 km high, and Miravalles Volcano, slightly higher, make up the twin peaks visible within the Guanacaste mountain range. Although the dormant volcanoes give the Tenorio National Park its name, it is best known for the beautiful and surreal Rio Celeste.

Rio Celeste is a captivating river and lagoon with a unique and curious blue hue. The color is generated from the chemistry of sulfur and calcium carbonates. Rio Celeste can only be seen by trekking into Tenorio on a moderately-challenging hike. Due to cloud and forest cover overhead, Tenorio National Park is a haven for flora and fauna species, waterfalls, hot springs, and innumerable rivers. Spend the afternoon gazing upon or dive right into all the wonders this park has to offer!

To hike Tenorio, check into the station on the entrance. Visitors must present their passport and pay the park entrance fee of $15 per person. All national parks are closed on Monday, so plan accordingly.
