Llanos del Cortez

AboutΒ Llanos del Cortez

Llanos del Cortez is a breathtaking and remote waterfall, most commonly enjoyed as a refreshing retreat by locals and the occasional tourist. After a leisurely 30 minute drive from the Liberia airport, only a short hike is required to reach the waterfall base. Upon arrival, the sheer presence of the waterfall irresistibly invites an invigorating dip in the serene waters. At an astonishing 60 feet high, the Llanos del Cortez waterfall sends cool, rushing water over the edge and into a calm and sandy pool below. An ideal stop for a family, group, or cozy couple looking for a romantic escape, the Llanos del Cortez is easy to reach and free to the public.

An essential stop while travelling along within the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica, the Llanos del Cortez is only a couple miles northwest of the small town, Bagaces. Most quickly accessed by vehicle, simply locate the Llanos del Cortez sign indicating down a short dirt road. The dirt road finally opens to reveal several pathways, which offer hike options to the top or the base of the waterfall. It is recommended to wear lace on shoes, as the paths can be slick and occasionally unsteady. Although there is no admission to Llanos del Cortez, local sponsors for community schools are commonly found near the pathways, accepting non-required donations if you choose.

Llanos del Cortez can easily be described as a rejuvenating way to escape the heat and soak in the natural awe of the surroundings. Imagine sitting along a green water edge, enjoying the soothing rhythm of water cascading down a rocky cliff, only to trickle into a peaceful pond. Rushing in from the Petero River, the water is consistently cool and ideal for swimming. Find a perfect spot to sit and meditate or practice yoga, as the duality of Llanos del Cortez is uniquely capable of exhilarating and restoring the spirit.
