About Palo Verde

Birdwatchers dream remote wetland sanctuary, unspoiled by civilization, and home to dozens of species. The Palo Verde National Park is situated on the banks of Rio Tempisque and is home to on of the largest concentrated areas of aquatic birds in all of Central America. Not only does Palo Verde offer tourists the best bird watching in all of Costa Rica, there is an abundance of flowers, fruits, and insects that converge on this Tempisque Conservation area.

The nationally protected Tempisque area also includes attractions such as the caves of Barra Honda, the Caballero Wildlife Refuge, and the Lomas Barbudal Biological Reserve. Due to its vast size, the entire Rio Tempisque river basin can be defined as the most biologically diverse areas of Costa Rica.

Upon a visit to Palo Verde, among the immensity of marine birds, visitors should also expect to see a range of mammals, to include armadillos, deer, monkeys, coatis, peccaries, and the largest population of jaguarundis in Costa Rica. Jaguarundis are small, brown wild cats that coexist in Palo Verde along with 55 different reptiles, amphibians, and large concentrations of crocodiles!
