The Nicoya Peninsula has a great swell window and surfing is always an activity in Playa Grande and across the bay in Tamarindo. Playa Grande in particular sticks way out on the very NW part of the peninsula, & our area gets most of its swell from the southern hemisphere. Some of the best waves are generated from April-November although the surfing is decent all year long. We get the very long period swells from the North Pacific from December-March. The constant Papagayo offshores winds in November-April gives surfers truly spectacular sessions during this time of year.

Playa Grande area is one of the most consistent areas for surfing in Central America. Whether you’re into surfing beach breaks like Playa Grande, Avellenas, Witch’s Rock and Marbella or reef breaks at Langosta, outer Avellanas and Playa Negra, the variety of waves never disappoint. And let’s not forget one of the best sand point breaks in Central America: Ollie’s Point. Some of the surf spots require a boat ride, some a short road trip, & some are right out front of our beach access.

Due to astronomical baggage fees from airlines (with the exception of JetBlue), we suggest renting a board from a local surf shop instead of bringing your own. Surf lessons and guides are also available in Playa Grande.
