Bahia de los Piratas

About Bahia de los Piratas

Bahia de los Piratas may not be as popular as the surrounding beaches in the Playa Grande vicinity dueΒ to its “off the beaten path” location, but seeking this place out is well worth the effort. About 15 minutes from Playa Grande and this beach can be accessed via the small town of Matapalo, veering south before meeting the shore of South Conchal.

You will know you made it upon seeing a skull and crossbones flag flying in one of the signature rock islands just off shore. Although not typically a surfing beach, paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling are common activities with it’s crystal clear waters. If you are looking to do some spear fishing, bring your gear to Piratas; it is a favorite location among local fisherman as grouper and other types of fish make their home among the rocks.Β If you aren’t looking to get wet, landlubbers can take horseback and ATV tours to Bahia de los Piratas and lounge on the beach for the day.

At low tide, the adventurous types can venture out to more beaches just past the south point or onto the rock island by following a trail of strategically placed boulders. Water shoes are a must as the rocks are slippery and these types of formations are often home to spiny urchins.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own coolers and food to Bahia de los Piratas.Β While there is one hotel on the beach with a bar, hours of operation have been known to be off.
