Sportfishing

Many may flock to the area for surfing, but you should know Playa Grande is close by to world-class offshore fishing. From May through October, the Northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica hosts some of the best sportfishing in all of Central America. Even the coastline is abundant with baitfish all along the shore line this time of the year.

Half day and full day charters are available with our local captains and experienced crew. Boats leave out of Tamarindo and Playa Flamingo, though guests should not, the Tamarindo boats are closer– just across the bay.

Half day charters can expect to catch some smaller mahi and tuna in shore along with Rooster fish and jacks, Anglers fishing on all day charters are more likely to catch larger mahi, wahoo, tuna marlin, and sailfishβ€”fisherman of all levels will not be disappointed.

During the months of November through April, the weather and fishing changes in our area. As the Papaygayo winds start to blow in November and the surface water drops, the bigger game fish move south 30 to 60 miles down the coast to places like Playa Samara. Though fishermen can still catch the larger game fish on the all day charters, be prepared to for the longer ride to the fishing grounds.

Playa Grande may be most well-known for it’s waves, but the fishing in the area is just as epic.

As a teaser, check out what you will be catching. Offshore: Sailfish, Marlin, Mahi Mahi and Tuna. Inshore: Snapper, Rooster, Jack Crevalle, Bonito, Mahi Mahi, Grouper and Mackerel.
