The National Park of Las Baulas encompasses all of Playa Grande and Playa Ventanas. This national park has been established solely to protect the delicate nesting grounds of the Leatherback sea turtles. Leatherback sea turtles can grow over 2 meters in length and weigh a whopping 700 kilos, making them one of largest reptiles on the planet! These gentle giants are on the brink of extinction, and Las Baulas park rangers and preservationist fiercely protect the nesting areas located on the top, soft sand portion of Playa Grande. Turtle watchers from far and wide come to Las Baulas every year to get a glimpse of these gentle giants.

Although egg poaching and looming tourism development threaten the Leatherback’s existence and delicate laying and hatching cycles, a balance and harmony is present with Las Baulas. The park was established in 1991 by locals, and since then, the MINAET along with a handful of turtle biologists have closely monitored the traffic on Playa Grande.

Nesting season for the Leatherback sea turtles occurs normally between October and March, during which season tourist are not allowed on the beach after 6pm without a park guide.
